Buying an Embryo: Key Highlights
- Recipient Mares Included: All embryos come implanted in recipient mares—no rental fees for you! However, you will need to sign the rental agreement with the mare owner. You can find these details under the Lot profile on our website.
- Transport Made Easy: If you’re an English buyer purchasing an embryo from Ireland or mainland Europe, Bolesworth Elite Auctions will cover the transport costs for the pregnant recipient mare to England. For all other buyers, you are responsible for covering the transportation costs to your chosen location. If the recipient mare is taken outside the UK, the purchaser will need to provide a deposit. This deposit will be fully refunded upon the mare’s return to the UK address.
- Returning Mares: After weaning, the recipient mare must be returned to the seller at your expense. Please refer to the auction catalogue for the specific return location. A vet’s certificate confirming the mare is in good health and fit to travel is also required.
- Sexed Embryos: If an embryo has been “sexed” as a colt or filly, this should be viewed as a strong indication rather than a guarantee.
What’s Covered by Insurance
Embryo insurance via Gallagher is automatically activated when the hammer drops.
Cover includes;
- Embryo insured against failing to be born alive and subsequently living to 7days after birth due to any cause. Sum insured is Fall Of Hammer value – e.g.
– Death of the dam (recipient mare) resulting in loss of the embryo
– Death of foal during the foaling or foal born dead
– Death or Destruction of foal on humane grounds in first 7 days after birth. This can be extended, please contact Sophie Chambers at Gallagher Insurance, mobile: 07771 554 089. - Death or destruction of recipient mare on humane grounds from FOH to 7 days at a value of £2,500.

Are the recipient mare and foal insured in the event of Life Saving Surgery being required?
Lots will also be covered by a compulsory Life-Saving Surgical extension – the premium of £224 (including Insurance Premium Tax at 12%) is payable by the buyer and will be added to the sale price. The cover includes;
- Reasonable and customary veterinary expenses incurred in respect of the following:
– Surgical procedures necessitated solely in an emergency to save the life of the horse, and
– After-care costs while the animal is retained at the equine surgical facility but shall be limited to 50% of the cost of the surgery and shall not extend more than fifteen days from the time of the life-saving surgery. - The above cover is based on a limit of £2,500.00 per recipient mare and £5,000.00 per foal (once born). The maximum claim payable is £5,000 in the aggregate.
